A Period of Revolution:
Following the age of embarrassment in the 19th century, modern China began to take shape at the the start of the 20th century. In doing so this period became a time of revolution, with a series of revolutions eventually resulting in communist control of China. Yet it was ultimately this narrative of revolution that set China on to the path of globalization, that has today made China a top power in the world. This series of revolutions began with the Boxer Rebellion in which China expelled much of the foreign influence that had defined the age of embarrassment. However this website will seek to look at the internal revolutions that truly shaped the national identity of China. In doing so, we have sought to provide a comprehensive overview of the revolutions and the people that shaped them. Additionally, we have sought to place this period of revolution within a global context, by exploring the impact of events such as World War II on China. In an effort to understand the big picture of these events please reference the overview timeline.
